Course Overview

Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) comprises of digital trunked mobile standards developed by the European Telecommunications Standardization Institute (ETSI) to meet the needs of Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) user organizations for public safety, military services, transportation, government services, disaster and emergency. Some unique PMR services of TETRA radios include the wide area fast call set-up, Direct Mode Operation (DMO) with “back to back” communications facility, high level voice encryption for security requirements of public safety organizations, and emergency call facility in any disaster.

Keeping this vision in mind, advanced TETRA systems are being integrated in airports and other transportation systems, which are equipped with Tetra base stations (TB3) and Tetra-based wireless communication devices like TH1n and THR9i. These advanced TETRA systems integrate the security systems, operational systems and communication systems at the airports to enhance the communication and data security.

For these PMR services, 100% public safety organizations rely on private mobile radio for critical voice communications, while 89% public safety decision makers believe data is also mission critical. However, it happens sometimes that when public safety needs that data the most, the public networks are the least available. This urges designing of public safety networks that are ready for worst circumstances and ensure timely coverage and control, without any connectivity restrictions, bandwidth issues or security risks.

For this purpose, a future-ready tetra system is required based on a unified IP architecture that offers a seamless entry point into public safety LTE broadband network with the facility of operating the access technologies as a single service. For this purpose, data mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) is setup in the TETRA system to handle critical and non-critical data. Then the system is expanded with LTE core for critical grade data services. This LTE functionality is grouped within TETRA network and thus the TETRA services are dismantled critical public safety communication and networking.
